Next Step Learning Center

At Next Step Learning Center in Oakland, California, low-income youth and adults re-engage in education. With the support of caring staff, dedicated tutors and a stimulating curriculum, students build basic literacy, earn high school diplomas and GEDs, gain job skills and prepare for college and successful careers. SNJM’s Women on a Mission podcast interviewed Sister Cynthia Canning and Sister Rosemary Delaney, who served as Co-Directors of Next Step for its first 21 years.

African Sisters Education Collaborative

“We celebrate you, Sisters, because you have persevered,” said SNJM Sister Barbara Spears at the graduation ceremony for 64 Sisters in Ghana. Graduates recently completed the Sister Leadership and Development Initiative program presented by the African Sisters Education Collaborative.

Nuestra Casa

Immigrants in need of help learning to read, write and speak English find both a warm welcome and access to basic educational resources at Nuestra Casa in Washington’s lower Yakima Valley. SNJM’s Women on a Mission podcast interviewed Nuestra Casa founder Sister Mary Rita Rohde and former executive director Caty Padilla about how the organization has transformed lives for farmworker families seeking a better future for themselves and their children through education.
UNANIMA International

In 2000, Sister Catherine Ferguson invited members of the U.S. Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) to form a coalition Non-Governmental Organization to advocate at the United Nations on behalf of women and children. Now with 22 coalition partners, UNANIMA works at the UN for structural change on behalf of women and children living in poverty, immigrants and refugees, and the welfare of our planet.
