In 1868, six young Sisters of the Holy Names journeyed from Montreal, Canada to San Francisco, CA. Upon their arrival on May 10, the Sisters were met by the Sisters of Mercy, who treated them to strawberries and cream. Soon after, Father Michael King arrived and brought the Sisters to a site bordering Lake Merritt in Oakland, where Father King and parishioners had built a convent and school for the Sisters. From those humble beginnings, SNJM ministries spread to many areas in California. The Sisters carry that passion for ministry as they bring the Gospel message to today’s world.
