Please join us in prayers of thanksgiving for the life of Sister Juliana Lucey. Juliana was 98 years old and celebrated her 75th jubilee in 2024.
Juliana was an educator and an adventurer. With a background in mathematics, she began her ministry in education in California, teaching at the elementary level before switching to secondary education. She then moved to the university level, where she taught for four years at Holy Names College before expanding her teaching career to universities across various states, including Arizona, Missouri, Michigan, Wisconsin and Alaska. During her time in Alaska, Sister Juliana had the opportunity to join a Marine Science Research expedition, becoming the resident mathematician on a research vessel in the Bering Sea. She later participated in additional research expeditions in the Gulf of Alaska, as well as in England and Costa Rica. These adventures inspired her next ministry calling: Peace Corps assignments in Micronesia, Lithuania and Ukraine. She had many opportunities to travel, responding to calls to be of service where her talents and expertise could make a difference. After her last Peace Corps assignment, she lived at our convent in Los Gatos for several years serving and assisting as needed. She then retired and moved to Southern California where she volunteered as a docent at the Huntington Library and Museum.
We remember Juliana for her wonderful spirit of curiosity, her independent spirit, her unique perspective and her love of adventure. She enjoyed science, mathematics and sports all with great passion. Even in her final years she was able to recall memories of past experiences, and she continued to be a woman of deep gratitude for the simple kind actions of others. She loved her family, our congregation and was a faithful woman of God. May her memory be blessed.
