Miriam Daniel Fahey, SNJM

February 14, 1927 – November 25, 2024

In the evening of November 25, 2024, Sister Miriam Daniel Fahey (Jeanne Elizabeth Fahey) entered into eternal life. She was 97 years old and celebrated 78 years of religious profession as a Sister of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary.

Her formal educational ministries spanned from first grade teacher at Saint Anselm (San Anselmo) to Spanish professor at Holy Names University (26 years). Additionally, she taught at Ramona Convent Secondary School (Alhambra), Saint Joseph (San Francisco), St. Ignatius (Sacramento), Saint Anthony (San Gabriel), Saint Bernard High School (Los Angeles) and Holy Names High School (Oakland). As a Spanish educator, she served as president of two Foreign Language Associations, taught Advancement Placement Spanish, corrected Advanced Placement exams and served as a principal investigator for the California Foreign Language Project.

Additionally, and as importantly as her ministry in formal education, were Sister Miriam Daniel’s other ministries. She served as Director of the Juniorate for the sisters, and Spanish tutor and translator even up to the last few weeks of her life. Her 15-year ministry at Santee Mission/St. Maria Goretti was transforming for both the people and for Sister Miriam Daniel. She wrote, “It opened up the possibility of my being the voice for the less fortunate, strengthening the catechetical program, training people in various ministries (lectors, Eucharistic ministers and altar servers) and working with the city to improve the plight of those who are poor.”

Sister Miriam Daniel loved life. Her eyes often danced in delight as she greeted each person, shared the latest news about the large Fahey clan whom she loved deeply or carried on animated conversations in either English or Espanol. Her interests were extensive: cooking, gardening, traveling, singing in choirs, enjoying the symphony and classical music, and playing bridge.

Sister Miriam Daniels’s Mass of Resurrection will be on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 1:30 pm at Saint Mary Church in Los Gatos, California. A reception will follow. Her burial will be later. Gifts in her memory may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Names: P.O. Box 907, Los Gatos CA 95031-0907 or online at www.snjmuson.org
