Sister Jacqueline Slater, SNJM

February 19, 1932 – January 23, 2024

In the early morning of January 23, 2024, Sister Jackie Slater (Sister Magdalena Mary) slipped into heaven.

Sister Jackie was 91 years old and celebrated 71 years of religious profession as a Sister of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary.

Sister Jackie’s ministerial life was diverse. She first taught music in elementary schools in both Southern and Northern California. Then she spent 17 years in secondary education teaching and in administration as Dean of Students, Dean of Studies or Vice-Principal for Academics at St. Andrew High School (Pasadena), St. Bernard High School (Los Angeles), St. Monica (Santa Monica) and Ramona Convent Secondary School (Alhambra). From ministry in secondary education, Sister Jackie then worked in the Admissions Office of Holy Names University (Oakland) for two years.

In the early 1980’s Sister Jackie felt called to parish ministry serving at both St. William and Santa Teresa parishes in the San Jose Diocese. She loved this ministry and the interactions she had with the parishioners. She concluded her time in formal ministry as hostess and manager of Villa Los Gatos and providing community service for the Convent in Los Gatos.

A ministry in her “retirement” that brought joy to Sister Jackie’s heart was volunteering at O’Connor Hospital holding babies in the NICU. Sister Jackie had refined tastes in music, food and clothing. She loved listening to classical music, preparing delicious meals and creating artistically beautiful flower arrangements for Holy Spirit Chapel. A ready smile could be found on Sister Jackie’s face when she encountered any dog.

Sister Jackie’s Mass of Resurrection will be on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Holy Spirit Chapel, 65 W. Rincon Avenue, Campbell, CA 95008. A reception will follow. Please RSVP by February 14 to dwebb@snjmuson.org if you plan on attending the mass and reception. Her burial will be later.

Gifts in her memory may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Names: P.O. Box 907, Los Gatos CA 95031-0907 or online at www.snjmusontario.org/donate.
