Sister Lorean Whiteman, SNJM

July 30, 1937 – November 10, 2023

Lorean was a talented classroom teacher for many years. She saw the unique needs of each student which drew her to focus her work toward students with learning differences and learning disabilities. After she left classroom teaching, she became a tutor helping children and adults with math. Her support made a difference in the lives of many, especially those who struggled with learning differences. Her tutoring often opened new pathways for employment for her students as their confidence in their math skills grew. Lorean was delighted by beauty, and she loved to create it. She once sculpted an altar for the Silver Spring Convent from an interesting tree stump. Her work brought out the beauty of the wood as a prayerful reminder of God’s creation. She was also skilled in the art of calligraphy, and she loved to share this talent in service to others. She found beauty in organization, order and structure. She had a keen eye for detail, understood systems and was able to complete tasks with great skill and high quality.

We remember Lorean as being very intelligent and having a good heart. She was gentle, quiet and caring. She loved animals and God’s creation. She had a strong desire to serve and to participate in community life despite lifelong physical difficulties and personal struggles. She decided to donate her brain to help others—an act of great generosity, a trait she displayed often in her life. She valued our congregation. She was a woman of deep confidence and faith. May her memory be blessed.
