Sister Roberta Ann Thompson, SNJM departed this life on August 9, 2023 at Montgomery MedStar Hospital in Olney, Maryland.

Sister Roberta celebrated 78 years of life and 59 years of her religious profession.

A Mass of Resurrection was held Friday, August 18, 2023, at 12:00 p.m. at Church of the Little Flower in Bethesda, Maryland.

Her burial took place Thursday, August 24, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Cemetery in Glenmont, New York.

Sister Roberta Ann Thompson (Sharon Thompson), a Sister of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, died on Wednesday, August 9 in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Sister Roberta was born in Mineola, New York, one of four children of Robert Thompson and Nancy (Rapp) Thompson. She is survived by her sister Jane Thompson, her brother Bill Thompson, and Pat Thompson, wife of her deceased brother, Bruce, and nieces, Sara, Ann Marie and Kate, and nephews Vinny, and John.

Sister Roberta professed her first vows in August 1964 and made her final profession of vows in August 1969 in Albany, New York. She received a B.S. in Education at Medaille College, Buffalo, New York and her M.A. in Religious Education at St. Michael’s College, Winooski, Vermont. She was certified as a Teacher of Reading in the State of Florida and had a Permanent Certificate as an Elementary Teacher in the State of New York.

Her ministries spanned the years from 1966 to the present. She taught in a number of elementary schools from 1966 through 1995: St. Gabriel in Washington, D.C., St. Peter Claver and Academy of the Holy Names in Tampa, Florida, St. Catherine of Siena and Academy of the Holy Names Lower and Middle School in Albany, New York.

Sister Roberta enjoyed a sabbatical year at the Washington Theological Union and then from 1996 to the present she has served as the Director of Religious Education at Little Flower Parish in Bethesda, Maryland. For two years, she served as the Regional Coordinator of the Sisters of the Holy Names in Albany, New York and for the past two years has been a member of the Mid-Atlantic Mission Centre team.

The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at Noon at the Church of the Little Flower, 5607 Massachusetts Avenue, Bethesda, Maryland. Visitation with the family and the Sisters of the Holy Names will take place before the Liturgy from 10:30 a.m. to noon. At Sister Roberta’s request the Burial will take place at a later date at Calvary Cemetery in Glenmont, New York, where many of the Sisters of the Holy Names are buried.
