(Barbara Mary Falvey)
November 28, 1924 – January 24, 2021
Sister Michaeline Mary Falvey, SNJM (Barbara Jane Falvey), a native San Franciscan, passed away the morning of January 24, 2021. Sister Michaeline was 96 years old and a professed Sister of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary for 75 years.Sister Michaeline served as elementary school educator for 17 years at Saint Joseph (Pomona), All Souls (Alhambra), Saint Augustine (Oakland) and Saint Cecilia (San Francisco). She was the secondary school principal at Saint Monica High School (Santa Monica) at a time when the school went from being a co-instructional to co-educational institution. Sister Michaeline served as Director of the Juniorate, in provincial administration and as Justice and Peace coordinator for the Holy Names Sisters in California. During her ministry as Justice and Peace coordinator her life-long passion for justice came to the fore. She was an ESL volunteer for many years in San Francisco. Sister Michaeline worked with women building their English skills, but just as importantly she was being touched by the women and their lives.
Her lifetime of ministries only hint of the richness of Sister Michaeline’s life. Her life is more fully marked by her “loves”. Sister Michaeline loved her religious vocation and her community. She loved her Irish heritage, her family and “The City” (San Francisco). Her love for the students she taught was reciprocated over and over again with many former students keeping in touch with her decades after being taught by Sister Michaeline. Her love of music and singing enriched many a gathering. She is survived by her loving sister, Irene Platz (Bill) and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Peter and Mary Falvey, and sisters, Sylvia Walsh, Patricia O’Looney and Fran Parrinello. She will be remembered fondly by many friends, colleagues, former students and the Sisters of the Holy Names and their Affiliates.
