Sister Barbara Williams, SNJM

Sister Roberta Marie

September 29, 1926 – February 12, 2017

Give me only your love and your grace.
That’s enough for me.

     ~Saint Ignatius Loyola

Sister Barbara Williams, on February 12, 2017, met face-to-face the God to whom she had long ago given her heart. Sister Barbara was 90 years old and just celebrated her 68th year of religious profession.

Sister Barbara was called and found great joy in being an educator.  She spent 13 years in elementary education including teaching at Sacred Heart and Our Lady of Lourdes (Oakland), Saint Anselm (Kentfield) and Saint Joseph (San Francisco). From elementary education, she moved to secondary education where she ministered at Marin Catholic and Holy Names High School.  For 25 years she taught and served at Holy Names University.

Just as she was called to be an educator she also was called to walk with others in their journey with God. From the early 1970’s until her death she did this. This journeying with others found expression in the Christian Life Communities she facilitated at Holy Names University, in being part of the SNJM Retreat Team, in her spiritual direction with countless individuals, including those at the Institute for Spirituality and Worship and the School of Applied Theology and very recently, in her leading the 19th Annotation – an Ignatian Retreat in Daily Life at Merrill Gardens in Campbell.

Sister Barbara will be remembered for her keen intellect, profound faith, depth of knowledge of spirituality, her laughter, her love of family and her gentle and loving presence.

She is survived by nieces, Monica Wilcox, Margaret Williams, Andrea Nelson, Roberta Williams, and nephew, Peter Williams, as well as other relatives.

Gifts in her memory may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Names, P.O. Box 907, Los Gatos, CA 95031 or on-line at

Sister Barbara Williams, SNJM departed this life on February 12, 2017 at Our Lady of Fatima, Saratoga, California. Sister Barbara celebrated 90 years of life and 68 years of her religious profession.
