Reception and Concert for Village at Mary’s Woods Community

December 2, 2017 at 6:00 pm10:00 pm

Benefiting the philanthropic initiatives of Mary’s Woods
December 1, 2, 3

As a mission-driven, not-for-profit organization, Mary’s Woods has the unique privilege of enhancing the lives of the residents and staff who live and work on the Mary’s Woods campus, as well as members of the broader community. One of the many significant roles this Gala Benefit Weekend plays is in supporting Mary’s Woods programs that allow older adults in the community to age with dignity and independence. This important work helps further the mission of Mary’s Woods, and of their sponsor, the Sisters of the Holy Names, who began their work on the historic campus over 100 years ago.

Thank you for joining with us and making a difference in the lives of older adults at Mary’s Woods and the broader community.

December 1

MJ New Quartet with Jazz pianist Darrell Grant

Led by jazz pianist Darrell Grant, the MJ New Quartet is a virtuoso quartet who revisit the introspective elegance and sophisticated soundscape of the Modern Jazz Quartet.

Rooted in the cultural diversity of the 1920’s Harlem Renaissance, for more than 40 years the Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ) served as the embodiment of classic jazz cool. With all the savoir faire of a martini—shaken not stirred—the MJQ deftly melded Bach fugues, American song, mid-century modernism, and the blues into a sound unlike any other. Following the lead of these masters, MJ New’s blend of classical and jazz pays homage to the legendary MJQ and imagines a distinctly new sound.

Rebecca Kilgore

She is one of America’s leading song stylists who finds particular delight in preserving and interpreting the music of the great American Song Book.

She regularly performs worldwide at jazz festivals, jazz parties, and on jazz cruises. She has been a frequent guest on National Public Radio’s ‘Fresh Air’ with Terry Gross, has appeared on ‘A Prairie Home Companion’, and with Michael Feinstein at Carnegie Hall.  She is honored to have been inducted (in 2010) to the Oregon Music Hall of Fame and to the Jazz Society of Oregon’s Hall Of Fame, and to have been invited to perform at New York’s Mabel Mercer Cabaret Convention for three years at Town Hall and Lincoln Center. She was the guest of honor at the 2013 Roswell (New Mexico) Jazz Festival, and honored as a Jazz Legend at the San Diego Jazz Party in 2016.
