Celine Steinberger, SNJM
Rina and Leo Steinberger, my beloved parents had a devotion to St. Therese, the Little Flower, before they were married and decided if their first child was a girl, they would name her Celine after St. Therese’s sister. I was born on October 3, the Feast Day of St. Therese at that time. My given name is Celine Therese, a gift I have always treasured.
My Mom, all Italian and my Dad, all German, were amazing! They possessed the best qualities of their nationalities which were passed on to my sister, two brothers, and me. Beyond this, our parents constantly inspired me with their deep faith, daily life of prayer; their love of God, family, and neighbor.
Living in the shadow of both St. Joseph’s and Holy Names Academy was a grace. The SNJM’s and the SJ’s taught Janie, Vincent, Richard and me. That was a gift then and in the years to come. As a young girl, I felt so blessed to be called to a Religious Community whose Foundress was Marie-Rose.
My years at Fort Wright College, Spokane, where I received my BA/MA in Education prepared me well with a sense of competence and creativity for ministry. For twelve years I was delighted to be a primary teacher in Spokane, Seattle, Tacoma, and Edmonds and there became the principal. My seventeen years in formal education were experiences of a lifetime.
The next thirty years led me through educational transitions. For ten years I was the Executive Director of Holy Names Center at Fort Wright, an Education Conference and Retreat Center. As Director of Development, the last twenty years I have traveled far and wide telling our SNJM story. Could I have ever dreamt the Little Flower and Marie-Rose would lead me to this ministry of building relationships, loving others, and finding Partners in Ministry for our mission? Never!
To be a Sister of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary has strengthened me to be more than I could have asked or imagined. I CELEBRATE this year with a sense of deep gratitude to all who have been, are, and will be a part of my life.
